I hope you can help me, sorry I do not speak Finnish, but I know many of you will speak and understand English without problem. I have an Emma bottle, that came with a square decanter stopper, the glass seems the same colour, but has a texture to it that seems more in keeping with an Italian Empoli decanter, rather than a Riihimaen one. Does the Emma bottle come with a stopper, or has the original owner simply matched it up with one? Many thanks, Lynne

Hi, Lynne. I've just joined Designlasi and noticed your post, because it is in English (I'm from the UK). I can't find any K.Tynell 'Emma' decanters on this site, which is a puzzle to me, since your piece should be listed here if it is by Tynell. I only have other 'Emma' vases in my glass books; no decanters. Though your decanter has the same pattern it looks lighter and not as sharply moulded. Is it some sort of copy? If the decanter and stopper have been matched up then the colour would be very slightly different, so I would guess that the stopper is original(it should fit well). The stopper texture could be just a diffrent batch of glass, and therefore correct. It's an interesting piece and worthy of more research. Regards Keith

Hi, I asked as well on the Glass Message Board, and it seems that the Emma decanter (and other decanters) were designed more as bottles without stoppers than decanters with stoppers. It was felt that the colour and mould lines were good, and that the item was right. The stopper I reckon is an Italian Empoli stopper - I have found identical stoppers for that maker, with the texture matching the bottle better than for the Emma.

Hi
I have a clear version with the same stopper..so it seems unlikely that is has been 'matched up'
Ii is sharply moulded, and the stopper is not unlike one I had in a dice vase a while ago
I have no reason to believe they're not Riihimaen

Hi Robert, that is interesting. Does your stopper have a plastic base to it with "fins"?

Hi
It's at my weekend home, so I'll take pictures and post them at the weekend.
The stopper has exactly the same plastic insert as a Dice Vase I had a while ago though
I'll photograph it next to another Emma vase for comparison too.

Regards
Robert

Hi Lynne and others, who have been discussing the "Emma" vase mystery. It is a long time already, so you might have found the picture of the one and only Emma vase already at this website: you can look under "Suunnittelijat", i.e. designers, where tou find Helena Tynell (Tynell, Helena) (or: https://designlasi.com/fi/content/emma). The colours are blue, red, green and brown. It has never been a decanter, but a vase (which, however, is very unpractical to use as a vase since it is almost impossible to clean! - I have a red one).

So I believe, Lynne, that your item is not an Emma, but something else.

There is, by the way, a very interesting small exhibition "Glass&Metal" about Helena Tynell's and her husband Paavo Tynell's work in Tuusula, Finland, at the moment. She was born in 1918, and was present at the opening. - This is unfortunately only in Finnish: http://www.tuusula.fi/museot/wendelin/kalenteri/nayta.tmpl?id=504;numero.... - So if ou happen to come to Helsinki before the end of August, you have a chance to see it! (Tuusula is not far from Helsinki.)

I've now found what looks like an Aurinkopullo but with the same stopper with plastic fins
Again it is uncased and the colour is slightly different- the quality not so good, I'm pretty sure these are copies- probably Italian
